Preach Christ

2 Cor.4:5  For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord;

     I've been a Christian for 33 years now, and I bet I can count about 20 to 30 times that I have heard any message about Christ, or that are related to Christ. That's including Evangelistic preaching, which used to be the main venue for a message about Christ. I've heard messages about psychology (preaching Freud, Jung, Glasser) I've heard messages on how to be a good person, wife, husband, mother, child, teen and even minister. Why is that ? Why do we teach about everything under the sun except Jesus Christ? Paul said the Jesus is the foundation and that we should take heed how we build upon that foundation, because if we build with wood, hay, or stumble, then on the day of testing it will have a hard time standing.
     I used to do construction work, and I was learning to build custom homes from masonry, brick, stone etc, and if the contractors who laid the foundation did a poor job then it affected our finished product. One particular house that cost 750,000 dollars had a faulty foundation (we did not do the masonry work on this house) and just as they finish carpenters were about done on the inside the walls starting cracking on the outside. The contractor noticed it, as well as the home owners, and because sick to his stomach, because he knew it was a foundation problem that would cost 10's of thousands of dollars to fix. After a few weeks the crack grew to a one inch gap and was still growing the last we heard. Everyone was scrambling to try and save the house because, by this time, the cracks were on the inside of the custom built home. The house was virtually worthless at that time because the cracks were growing daily.
    The foundation we lay in our spiritual lives is equally important to the survivability of our spiritual home. If we lay any other foundation other than Christ sooner or later cracks will appear in our theology, lives, attitudes and behavior. At that point we have to go back to square on and replace the faulty foundation with a strong one. And just as in the real world the concrete must have all the ingredents included to be strong, so must we gain the proper amount of the knowledge of Christ in order to make our spiritual foundations strong.
    The two questions to ask when building this foundation are theses:
1) Who is Christ ?
2) What did Christ come to do?

I'll give you some things to search for in the scripture as a starting point because Jesus said that the scriptures testified of him. For number 1) - Christ is Lord, God in the flesh, the beginning and end, Jehovah, the bread of life, the sacrificial lamb of God, the light of the world, the way to God , the truth, the life of all men. He is our Healer, Provider, Brother, Friend, and our Righteousness, Sanctification, Redemption, and Wisdom, to name but a few. 2) - Christ came to redeem mankind, obey the law of Moses, institute the New Covenant, Crush the head of satan, reverse the curse of Adam, restore believing man to the authority Adam lost, usher in the everlasting presence of God, Shed his blood for our sins, baptize us in His Holy Spirit, Show us the Father through his life, to name but a few.

Another way to search the scripture to learn about Christ, is to study the names of God. God is only one God, yet he used multiple names in order to describe some aspect of his nature and character. For instance, instead of simply saying I am Jehovah the Lord added to our understanding of his nature by saying, I Am the Lord that healeth thee. He also said His name was Jealous, God Almighty, Elohim, the Bright and Morning Star, Jehovah our Righteousness etc.

2Co 3:18  But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

When Christ is our foundtion we can continuously behold him through meditation, worship, and verbal confessions until our minds are renewed and we are transformed into the image and likeness of Christ in our character. But if we have not heard of him how can we believe in him? We have no frame of reference in which to meditate, worship, or speak positive confession over our life.  For instance, if you want to confess that Christ is your Righteousness but have never heard what that means, then what are you confessing? Do you know why Christ is your righteousness, what did Christ do in order to make you the Righteousness of God?

If you're a new Christian, take this lesson as a starting point in which to build a solid spiritual foundation in your life so that you can be strong in the Lord. If you've been a Christian for a while yet never had the foundation of Christ established in your spiritual life, then it may be a little harder and take a little longer, but take this lesson and do exactly the same thing as if you're a new born Christian. Preach Christ to yourself if you're not getting the lessons in church, or ask your pastor to teach a 6 to 12 month lesson just on Jesus Christ based on the principles I've given here. I promise your life will never be the same.
